Liébana Valley has a special micro climate due to the great mountains that protect it and to the influence of the Cantabrian Sea. So that, it is very common to find sunny days when it´s raining in the rest of Cantabria. The clouds collide with the high Picos de Europa and they are not able to enter into valley. Potes is the geographical center of the region and where you can find most of the services and shops. During the Civil War, there was a great fire that burned part of the town, but a nice old town is still preserved and transports us to another time. There are important historical buildings such as the Torre del Infantado and good restaurants where you can taste typical products. The cable car of Fuente Dé, which overcomes a difference of 753 metres, takes us into the heart of the Picos de Europa, raising us up to a height of 1853 meters in only four minutes. The Monastery of Santo Toribio (XVI century) is a place chosen by monks to move away from the world and live according to the Benedictine rule. It´s said that once consolidated the Reconquista in this area, the Lignum Crucis relics were brought here from Jerusalem to deposit them in a safe place. This is a Gothic church with Cisterian influence with simple lines and spaces and with decorative sobriety, characteristics of the architecture of the Order of San Bernardo. The Torre del Infantado, the bastion of the town of Potes and the whole region of Liébana is a medieval building with the category “Bien de Interés Cultural” (Property of Cultural Interest). Crossing the entrance with pointed arch, we find six floors whose rooms are opened out onto a central courtyard. San Vicente de la Barquera is a town located in the coastal region of West Cantabria. It is very attached to the sea, fishing and traditions. Santander combines an urban environment with the essence of Cantabria: beaches, landscape, nature, gastronomy and culture. The gastronomy of Liébana Valley is famous for its cheese with two denominations of origin “quesucos de Liébana” y “Picón” and its “orujos” traditionally made in the region for centuries. But also, sausages, “boronos” and meat, both beef as suckling kids and lambs reared by farmers in the valley which then is offered in the restaurants in the area. Also is typical the famous “cocido lebaniego” made with chickpeas, chorizo, relleno… you can´t leave without trying this unique dish. (+info)
