Santander
Santander combines an urban environment with the essence of Cantabria: beaches, landscape, nature, gastronomy and culture. The city is organized around a large natural harbour, used since before the Roman Empire. The surrounding landscape is unique, with wide green spaces and beaches, highlighting the Sardinero and Magdalena area were Alfonso XIII had his summer residence. The historic centre was destroyed in 1941 by a serious fire, but the sea and surrounding countryside make this city a special place.
From Potes takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car. If you will spend several days in Liébana Valley, visit the beaches of the Sardinero, the Magdalena Palace and the Maritime Museum or walking through the nice harbour promenade can be a good choice. The famous Zoo Carbaceno, the largest animals park in Europe, is also close.
