The Picu Uriellu, also known as Naranjo de Bulnes, is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic peaks in Spain. Its location in the heart of the Picos de Europa and the inaccessibility of its summit makes it a very demanded peak for Spanish climbers and mountaineers.

At its west side there are some of the hardest routes in the world, “Orbayu”, so it´s common to find in the shelter hikers of all nationalities searching overcoming this vertical wall about 600 m.

But one of the great advantages of this summit is the existence of easy ascent routes that allow less accustomed to climbing to arrive to the top and to enjoy this unique moment on the Naranjo de Bulnes summit, a historic place.

Equipment that we will use:

  • Safety harness

  • Sunscreen
  • Mountain Clothes
  • Water and food
  • Lantern
  • Chance of clothes

Activity duration: 2 days (we will sleep at the shelter Urriellu).

Day 1: We will arrive from the hill called Pandébano (Sotres) to the Urriellu shelter (How arrive?). It will take us about 3 hours walking along a well-marked road with about 6km of length and 900m of altitude. Normally the shelter is the meeting point. Here will be given at the participants some technical explanations and we will reply all the questions that you could have.  

Day 2: We will leave early to the road and we will start climbing. Once at the summit, when we have returned to the base of the wall, we will start walking back to the car by the same road as we climbed the day before.

 

Ascents (routes):                                                                                                                                                            

The itinerary called “Directa de los Martínez” (+info), located on the south side of the Naranjo de Bulnes, is a relatively short route (150m) and easy but very amazing. So that, many mountaineers, although not climbers, dare to climb it accompanied by a mountain guide, having an unforgettable day. It is recommended for people less accustomed to climbing who want to experience ascending to the Urriellu summit.

The “Cepeda” (+info), located on the east side of the Naranjo de Bulnes, was opened more than half-century ago, in 1955. It´s a route relatively easy but the physical condicion begins to gain importance because of its 350 m itinerary. Ideal for climbers with some experience in  multi-pitch routes who want to enjoy the ascent to the “Picu” and to spend a long and nice day climbing.

The “Nani-Marisi” (+info), located on the west side of the Naranjo de Bulnes,  it has become in a classic route of the “Picu” in the last years. It consists in a long and nice route, without too much difficulty, that requires concentration and strength to overcome an ascent of more than 300 m.

“Amistad con el Diablo” (+info), located on the east side of the Naranjo de Bulnes, it isn´t a very difficult route but in which the possibilities of protect ourselves are few. So that, the lead climber must be very concentrated. However, it rewards us because of the spectacularity and the requirement , making the crown a very special moment.

The “Pidal Cainejo” itinerary (+info), located in the North side of the Naranjo de Bulnes, it isn´t a very difficult route but in which the chances of scape are minimal. So that, once we started climbing we won´t be able to leave the route until we arrive the summit. Long and beautiful, it requires concentration and physical preparation to overcome the 450 m ascent.
